Pricing
How much does an AI receptionist cost?
In the US, an AI receptionist for a small home-service business typically costs $50–$500+ a month. Self-serve software you set up yourself sits at the low end; fully managed services that build it and keep it updated for you sit higher, usually as a flat monthly plan with minutes included and a per-minute rate after that. A live answering service typically runs $200–$1,000+ a month, and a full-time receptionist costs several times more than either. What matters is the cost per answered call: a plan that captures one extra job a month that would have gone to voicemail usually pays for itself.
The three ways AI receptionists are priced
Almost every AI phone answering product uses one of three pricing models. Knowing which one you are looking at is the fastest way to compare quotes that look nothing alike.
- Flat monthly plan with minutes included. A fixed amount buys a block of talk minutes, and you pay per minute only if you go over. This is the most common model for small businesses and the easiest to budget. In the US these plans typically run $100–$700+ a month depending on the minutes included and how much of the work is done for you.
- Per-minute only. Little or no base fee, and you pay for every minute the AI is on a call, typically $0.30–$1.50 a minute. Cheap when call volume is very low, unpredictable when it is not. Check for monthly minimums and whether a 20-second hang-up is billed as a full minute.
- Self-serve software subscription. A platform you configure yourself, typically $30–$150 a month plus usage. It is cheap because you are the one writing the call flow, testing it and fixing what breaks. Fine if you have the hours for it; most owners running trucks do not.
| Flat monthly plan | Per-minute only | Self-serve software | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical US price | $100–$700+ a month | $0.30–$1.50 a minute | $30–$150 a month plus usage |
| Who does the setup | Usually the provider | Varies | You |
| Predictable bill | Yes, until you pass the minutes | No | Partly |
| Best for | Steady call volume, owners who want it handled | Very low volume or a short trial | Owners comfortable building and maintaining it |
| Watch out for | Overage rate, contract or minimum term | Minimums, rounding up to the full minute | Your own time, calls that fail because of a setup mistake |
What actually drives the price
Two things move the number more than anything else: how many minutes the AI spends on calls, and how much of the setup and upkeep is done for you.
- Minutes on the phone. A booking or quote call for a plumber, HVAC company or electrician usually lasts a few minutes; plan on three to four to be safe. If the AI only answers when you cannot (after hours, on a job, when the line is busy), your minutes are a fraction of your total call volume.
- Managed or do-it-yourself. A managed service writes the call flow around your business, tests it, and changes it when your hours or services change. Self-serve tools hand you a dashboard and a tutorial. Managed costs more per month and almost nothing in your time; self-serve is the reverse, and a change to your script may be a support ticket with a fee.
- Setup fees and contracts. Some providers charge a one-time setup fee, typically $0–$500+ in the US, and some require a minimum term. Ask before you sign.
- Connections to your calendar or CRM. Some plans include these, some charge extra, some do not offer them. If you want appointments on your calendar rather than in your inbox, make sure the plan you are quoted includes it.
How to estimate your monthly bill
Take a two-truck plumbing company that gets about 25 calls a week and wants the AI to answer all of them. At three minutes a call, that is about 325 minutes a month.
- Per-minute at $0.75: about $245 a month, and it moves every month with your call volume.
- Flat plan with 400 minutes at $229: $229, with room to grow before any overage.
- Same company, AI answers only after hours and when the line is busy: about 8 calls a week, roughly 100 minutes a month. Now a smaller plan or a per-minute rate is cheaper.
Count your own calls before you compare quotes. Your call log shows last month’s inbound calls, and the missed-call calculator shows what the ones you did not answer were worth.
AI receptionist cost against the alternatives
This is how the main options compare for a small home-service business in the US.
| AI receptionist | Live answering service | Hiring a receptionist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical monthly cost | $50–$500+ | $200–$1,000+ | Wages, taxes and benefits, several times any of these |
| Coverage | 24/7, can handle several calls at once | 24/7 on most plans, agents can be busy at peak | Business hours only, one call at a time |
| Can transfer a live call to a person | Usually not; CallSide AI does not | Yes | Yes |
| Knows your business | As well as the setup, done once and kept updated | Reads from a script, agents change | Best of the three, after training |
| Where it wins | Price, coverage, consistency | Calls that need a human judgment call now | Anything beyond the phone |

What CallSide AI costs
CallSide AI uses the flat monthly model with minutes included, and the setup is done for you. Starter is $149 a month with 150 minutes, then $0.69 a minute. Pro is $229 a month with 400 minutes, then $0.59 a minute. Business+ is $699 a month with 1,500 minutes, then $0.49 a minute. There is no setup fee, you are live in 1–2 business days after a short questionnaire, monthly plans can be canceled any time, and the first month carries a 30-day money-back guarantee. The free trial gives you 25 minutes with no credit card. Website chat is an optional add-on from $99 a month. Full details are on the pricing page; how it works covers the setup.
Where the alternatives win: if you get only a handful of calls a month, a per-minute tool will be cheaper than any flat plan. And if callers regularly need to be transferred to a person mid-call, a live answering service does that and CallSide AI does not. What it does is answer 24/7, flag urgent calls by rules you set and get the details to you immediately, capture the appointment request on every call and book directly when your calendar is connected, and email you the lead with a transcript and recording the moment the call ends.
Questions owners ask
Is an AI receptionist cheaper than an answering service?
At the same call volume, usually yes. Answering services pay people to sit on the phone, so their plans typically start around $200 a month in the US and their per-minute rates run higher. At very low volume the two can land close together. Compare the cost per answered call, not the base fee.
Do I pay for calls the AI does not answer?
On most plans, minutes count only while the AI is on the line. If you answer daytime calls yourself and forward only after hours or when you are busy, you use far fewer minutes than your total call volume suggests.
What happens when I go over my minutes?
On a flat plan you pay the overage rate per extra minute, typically under a dollar. If you go over every month, the next plan up is usually cheaper than paying overage.
Are there setup fees?
Some providers charge one, typically $0–$500+ in the US. CallSide AI does not; setup, testing and ongoing changes are included in the monthly plan.
