Locksmith
AI receptionist for locksmiths: how does it work?
An AI receptionist for a locksmith answers calls to your business line 24/7 in a natural voice, so a lockout call at 11 pm does not go to voicemail while you are on another job. It asks what the caller needs, collects the exact location and the kind of lock problem, flags urgent calls by rules you set, quotes only what you approved, captures the appointment request, and emails you the lead with a transcript and recording the moment the call ends. It does not send anyone out and it does not verify who owns the lock. That stays with you, on site, the way it does today.
Lockout calls go to whoever picks up first
Someone standing outside their front door at night with a dying phone and a cold kid is not going to leave a voicemail. They call the first locksmith on the list, and if it rings out, they call the second. The company that answers with a real next step usually gets the job.
The problem is that you cannot pick up halfway through a rekey, in the middle of a car opening, or while driving. Each of those moments is a call that rings out, and a lockout caller does not call back. That is the gap an AI receptionist closes: it picks up when you cannot, gets the details, and gets them to you.
The kinds of calls a locksmith gets
Locksmith calls are unusually varied for a one-truck business. A typical day mixes:
- Lockouts. Home, car, or business. Time-sensitive, often after hours, and the caller wants to know two things: how fast and how much.
- Rekeys and lock changes. A new homeowner, a landlord between tenants, lost keys, or a break-in. Less urgent, but the break-in caller wants someone today.
- Broken or stuck keys. A key snapped off in the cylinder, an ignition that will not turn, a jammed deadbolt.
- Car keys and fobs. Duplicates, lost-all-keys jobs, programming. Callers want to know if you do their make and model.
- Commercial and quote work. Master key systems, panic bars, access control, safes. Estimate calls where the caller is comparing a few companies.
An AI receptionist is set up around these groups so it asks the right questions for each one, instead of taking a name and number and leaving you to start over on the callback.
How urgent calls are handled
CallSide AI flags urgent calls by rules you set and gets the details to you immediately. You decide what counts. For most locksmiths that list is a lockout with a child, an older relative, or a pet inside; a lockout in bad weather; a car lockout with the engine running; and anything following a break-in. When a call matches your rules it is marked urgent and sent to you right away with the transcript and recording, so you can call back from the truck.
It does not dispatch anyone and it does not call 911. If a caller describes someone trapped in a hot car or a break-in still in progress, the AI tells them to call emergency services first. It also does not explain how to open or bypass a lock over the phone. It collects what is happening and gets it to you.
What the AI asks on a typical locksmith call
The AI answers with your company name and a greeting you approve. If a caller asks whether they are talking to a real person, it says plainly that it is an AI assistant for your company. Then it asks the questions you set up during the short setup questionnaire:
- Name and callback number. Taken early, since lockout callers are often on a low battery.
- Exact location. Street address, or cross streets and a landmark for a car lockout in a parking lot.
- What is locked and what happened. Front door, car, business, safe; lost keys, broken key, lock damaged.
- Vehicle details for car calls. Year, make, model, and whether it is a lockout or a lost-key job, so you know what to bring.
- Timing. Right now, today, or a scheduled visit for a rekey or quote.
- ID on arrival. If you ask it to, the AI lets the caller know they will need to show ID or proof of access when you arrive. Verification itself is your job on site, as always.
If you do not do safes or certain fobs, or only serve a set radius, the AI can say so before anyone drives across town.
The price question
Nearly every locksmith caller asks what it costs before they book, and the industry’s reputation for bait-and-switch pricing makes that question tense. A clear answer wins trust. The AI says only what you approved in setup. Some locksmiths have it state a service call fee and a starting range for common jobs, such as a residential lockout or a rekey per cylinder. Others have it explain that the final price depends on the lock and is confirmed on site before any work starts. Either works; a vague script, or no answer at all, does not.
For rekeys and quote calls, the AI captures the appointment request on every call, and books directly when your calendar is connected. Without a connected calendar, the request still arrives in your inbox with the caller’s preferred times.
AI receptionist vs. the other options
Here is how an AI receptionist compares with an answering service and with answering the phone yourself, on the things that matter for a locksmith.
| Answering yourself | Answering service | AI receptionist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picks up while you are on a job | Only if you stop working | Yes | Yes, 24/7 |
| Asks the right locksmith questions | Yes, you know the trade | Basic script; often just a message | Asks the questions you set, every time |
| Several calls at once | No | Callers may wait in queue | Can handle several calls at the same time |
| Quotes a price | Yes, on the spot | Usually not allowed to | States only the fees and ranges you approved |
| Cost in the US | Your time and interrupted jobs | Typically $200–$1,000+ a month, billed per minute or per call | Flat plans from $149/mo with minutes included |
| Setup | None | Days to weeks | Live in 1–2 business days |
Where the alternatives win: nobody handles an odd call better than you. If a caller describes a lock you have never heard of, or a situation that sounds off, your judgment on the spot beats any script or AI. The AI is strongest for the calls that come in while your hands are full, and for the 9 pm to 7 am stretch. For a fuller comparison, see AI receptionist vs. answering service.
What it costs and how you get started
CallSide AI is a flat monthly plan with minutes included and no setup fee. The Free Trial is $0 for 25 minutes with no credit card. Starter is $149/mo for 150 minutes, Pro is $229/mo for 400 minutes, and Business+ is $699/mo for 1,500 minutes, each with a per-minute rate above the included minutes. Full details are on the pricing page, and this guide covers what the wider market charges.
Setup is a short questionnaire about your services, service area, hours, the pricing you want stated, and what counts as urgent. The AI is live in one to two business days. The first month carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, and monthly plans can be canceled any time. See how it works for each step, and the missed-call calculator to put a number on the calls you miss today.
Questions owners ask
Can the AI tell whether the caller actually owns the lock?
No, and it does not try. It can tell the caller that ID or proof of access will be needed when you arrive, if you ask it to. Checking that is your job on site, the same as it is now.
Can it transfer an urgent lockout call straight to me?
No. CallSide AI does not transfer live calls to a person and does not text callers. What it does is send you the lead by email the moment the call ends, marked urgent by your rules, with the transcript and recording, so you can call the customer back within a minute or two.
I am a one-person mobile locksmith. Is this overkill?
It is the situation it fits best. A one-person shop misses the most calls, because every job is a stretch of time when nobody can answer. Starter covers 150 minutes a month, and lockout calls are short.
Will it give a firm price for a car lockout?
Only if you give it one. You can have it state a fixed lockout price, a range, or a service call fee with the balance confirmed on site. If your after-hours pricing is different, tell it during setup and it will say so when asked. It will not invent a number.
